It is time once again when the Monmouth County Parks Department turns our county parks into killing fields. Starting October 1st through mid-February, deer hunting will be allowed in county parks from dawn to dusk. Hunting during the same hours when thousands of regular visitors, including many children, will be in the parks.
The Parks Department says it manages parkland for resource protection, safety, and recreation opportunities. The county parks had over 5.8 million park visitors last year. Allowing 775 alleged “sportsmen” with lethal weapons to hunt for 4 ½ months in the parks at the same time millions are visiting, is not effective safety management or resource protection.. The reality is the Parks Department is kowtowing to less than 1/100th of 1% of the county population whose enjoy the “sport” of killing live innocent animals.
Labeling hunting in public parks “wildlife management” is an oxymoron. Deer population is not managed or reduced by hunting. The reality is deer will reproduce more when threatened by herd reduction from hunting. Without hunting, deer reproduction adjusts to the limits of the food available in the area. The Parks Department is not interested in reducing the deer population by allowing hunting. They are insuring there will be ample prey to hunters to kill in coming years.
