Today in New Jersey history:
February 14, 1871: Thomas Adams reportedly introduced his invention, chewing gum, in a Hoboken drug store on Valentine’s Day, although Jersey City partisans dispute this, claiming Adams sold his product for the first time the previous year in their city.
February 14, 1934: Charles F. Hopkins, the last surviving New Jersey Civil War Medal of Honor recipient, died in Boonton. Hopkins was awarded the medal for carrying a wounded comrade off the battlefield at Gaines Mill, Virginia in 1862. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Boonton.
