Woman Pepper-Sprays Wall Police Officer At Whole Foods: Police

The woman had been yelling and "acting out of control," police said.

WALL, NJ -- A Brick Township woman is accused of pepper-spraying a police officer at Whole Foods as he was trying to arrest her after she caused a scene at the store Wednesday evening, Wall police said Thursday.

Susan L. Nye, 54, of Brick, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and disorderly conduct after the incident, which happened about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night, Wall Lt. Greg Carpino said.

Patrolmen Shane Roland, Thomas Gavaghan and Jason Kelly were called to the grocery store at 1933 Route 35 at 9:22 p.m. for a report of a woman who was yelling and acting out of control, Carpino said.

As the officers were dealing with Nye, attempting to put her under arrest on a charge of disorderly conduct, she pulled pepper spray from her pocket and sprayed Roland in the face. 

Nye was arrested and evaluated by EMS workers for non-life-threatening injuries then taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, for further evaluation, Carpino said.

Roland was evaluated by EMS and refused any further medical attention, he said.

Nye's bail was set at $33,500, no 10 percent option, by Judge Pugliese, Carpino said.
