The Answer to Your Never Ending Back Pain

There are over 3 million visits to the emergency room yearly because of sciatic nerve pain. The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that starts in the lower back and continues down to the feet and toes. Pain is created by pressure on one or more of the lumbar nerve roots, which make up the sciatic nerve. Often, pain is found when the piriformis muscle pinches the sciatic nerve. You may experience a mild tingling, a dull ache, or burning sensation in your lower back or legs. Some people find that the pain increases at night, when walking more than 50 yards, after standing or sitting for a long period of time, coughing, sneezing, or laughing. Most acute cases of sciatica will resolve themselves within 4-6 weeks. But what do you do when the pain returns or when it lingers for a longer period of time?

Your main goal will be to reduce swelling and improve the function of your muscles. Weekly or even daily stretching can improve these two things and begin to reduce the amount of pain you are feeling. Stretching may be able to maintain control of the pain, but in order to cease it's return, massage therapy is recommended.

If the pain resides in your lower back, the massage therapist can help the muscles around the nerve to relax and release tension which will provide immediate pain relief.

If it is your pelvic region that is feeling the discomfort, then the massage therapist will help realign the pelvis and eliminate tension which will provide you will relief of pain and inflammation.

Pain located in the buttocks will be relieved by alleviating any pressure that is being placed on the nerve. This act will reduce inflammation and swelling while reducing pain and discomfort.

Massage Therapy Will Help:

  • reduce back pain
  • increase range of motion
  • stimulate circulation
  • release tension
  • help the body heal itself naturally
Assisted stretching during the massage will also help stretch the muscles surrounding the sciatic nerve. For more information about the benefits of massage therapy for back pain go to http://saveyourself.ca/articles/sciatica.php
