Township Renews Deer Management Plan

Blue Ridge Sportsman's Club selected to again help control deer population.

With no changes to past practice, the Township Committee renewed its deer management plan with the Blue Ridge Sportman's Club, Thursday.

Despite recent objections by Mountainview Road resident John Merklinger to the club's exclusive right to hunt on township and county-owned property, the agreement continues the agreement for a sixth consecutive year.

The resolution setting the plan notes county approval for hunting on its land must still be granted. The county lands include the Dock Watch Hollow Quarry, which will be limited to bow hunting from Sept. 10 through Dec. 31 (except for Christmas Day).

Township properties that will be opened for hunting include a portion of the Wagner Farm property, the Codington farmstead, land between the Dead River and Mt. Bethel Road, areas south of Timber Ridge Drive, 87 Round Top Road, 19 Saw Mill Road, the Salvato Nature Preserve at 24 Mt. Horeb Road, the former D'Angelo property, and several other lots.

Many of the properties are limited to bow hunting only, and after a request by the Recreation Commission's Trail Committee to bar hunting on a section of property adjacent to the former Glenhurst Golf Course property until after Nov. 1, the club will not hunt there until after Sept. 24.
