Man Falls Asleep While Driving on Route 22, Arrested for DWI: Police

Green Brook police reported two DWI arrests on Route 22, a lawn mower fire, credit card fraud and two thefts last week in the blotter.

Green Brook, NJ -- A Bronx man was arrested on a number of charges after he fell asleep with his foot on the brake while waiting in traffic on Route 22, Green Brook police report.

On May 13 at 8:59 p.m. Patrolman Christopher Dill was monitoring traffic on Route 22 east from the Enterprise parking lot where there was a high volume of traffic due to construction.

When traffic began to move a red Dodge mini van did not move for at least a minute, police report.

Dill got out of his patrol car and walked over to the van where he found saw Anthony H. Tran, 39, of Bronx, N.Y., who appeared to be asleep, with his head down and a cell phone illuminated on his lap, according to the Green Brook police blotter.

Dill knocked on the window and did not get a response from Tran. He knocked again and Tran slowly looked at the officer and opened his eyes, according to police.

Dill reported Tran appeared to have fallen asleep with his foot on the brake. Dill went back into his patrol car, put on his lights and conducted a motor vehicle stop, police report.

Tran was charged with Improper Use of Cell Phone While Driving, Expired Driver's License, Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving and Delaying Traffic following a motor vehicle stop.

On May 9 at 2:24 p.m.: Lamarr P. Diaz, 33, of Somerville was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, Traffic on Marked Lanes, Obeying Traffic Signals and Refuse to Submit to Breath Testing following a motor vehicle stop on Route 22 West near Warrenville Road. Officer Randy Stratton reported Diaz did not stop at a red light at the corner of Rock Avenue and Route 22 and continued to speed down the highway while failing to maintain his lane.

On May 9 at 10:27 a.m.: The manager for Align Building Supply (Savona Tile) on Route 22 in Green Brook reported the business was a victim of credit card fraud. He reported on March 17 a person placed an order for $9,644.09 worth of Dakota-Grigio Tile. The credit card company reported on April 25 the transaction was invalid due to fraudulent use of credit card.

On May 10 at 4:29 p.m.: Officer Lawrence Goldstein responded to the Ivory Tower Motel on report of a theft. The victim reported checking out of the room at 10:30 a.m. and leaving a laptop bag with a laptop computer outside the room. When he returned to the room at 1:30 p.m. the bag was gone.

On May 11 at 4:08 p.m.: Police responded to 3 Pine Street on a report of a lawnmower fire. The lawnmower was located in the rear yard and fully engulfed in flames. Officer Stringer used fire supressant canisters from the patrol cars. The Green Brook Fire Department arrived and extinguished the remaining fire. The owner said he was using the mower when he heard a "pop" and saw a red flame emit from the engine compartment. The mower was a Murray valued at $500.

On May 12 at 7:57 p.m.: Police responded to 998 Washington Avenue for a report of theft. The victim reported someone stole a 2010 CAT305 DCR mini excavator sometime between 6:50 and 7:50 p.m.
