Man Who Ran Red Light Causes Roll Over Crash, Closes Rt. 22

The Plainfield man struck a Volvo, then continued driving onto the Ivory Tower's property and stopping at Bowlmor Lanes, police say.

GREEN BROOK, NJ — A Union County man who ran a red light on Route 22 caused a roll-over crash and the closure of Route 22 for several hours early Saturday morning, Green Brook Police Lt. Hans Case said.

At around 1:50 a.m., a grey Jeep, operated by Shaheem Young, 31, of Plainfield, was driving westbound on Route 22 when it ran the red traffic light at the intersection of King George Road in Green Brook, Case said.

Young's Jeep struck a Volvo, which was on King George Road heading across Route 22, south onto Sebrings Mill Road, Case said.

The Jeep struck the front bumper of the Volvo, then continued westbound, driving onto the property at 370 Route 22 (Ivory Tower Motel), then rolled over and struck a PSE&G utility pole, breaking the pole at the base, Case said.

The Jeep continued west and came to rest on its side in the parking lot of 380 Route 22 (Bowlmor Lanes), Case said.

The occupants of the Volvo were not injured in the collision, however Young suffered head injuries and was transported to University Hospital in Newark.

Route 22 westbound was closed for several hours while PSE&G made repairs to the utility pole.

The accident is currently under investigation.
