Watchung and Green Brook seniors can take advantage of a variety of programs at the Senior Wellness Center across Somerset County.

WATCHUNG/GREEN BROOK, NJ — Watchung and Green Brook seniors can take advantage of a variety of programs at the Senior Wellness Center in the township and across Somerset County.

Here’s a sampling of programs that will be held at Somerset County Senior Wellness Centers in August.

August 12 – A Tribute to Broadway by the Pettet Sisters at 10:45 a.m. The center will be filled with music as Kristen and Ashley Pettet join us for their Tribute to Broadway show. Entertaining music and stories from Broadway musicals past and present will be featured in this lively tribute.

August 24 – “Flavian: The Mind Reading Game Show” at 10:45 a.m. Think of a phone number…a date…a pet’s name…anything at all and see if Flavian can tell what you’re thinking. This truly mystical, mind-reading show is amazing and exciting at the same time.

SPECIAL EVENTS

August 23 & 25 – AARP Smart Driving Course – This “Lunch & Learn” opportunity with Lois Hockenbury will be held 12:45-3:45 p.m. on both days. A classroom, driver-improvement course, this program teaches motorists about new traffic laws and defensive driver techniques. With the completion of this program, participants will receive two points off your license and 5% off your insurance for three years. The fee for AARP members is $15.00 and $20.00 for non-members.

August 25 – “A Caribbean Getaway Performance” by DNA Music Entertainment, 10:45 a.m. Enjoy a day in the Caribbean without leaving Bridgewater. Dress for the islands as you may be the lucky winner of a door prize for the “Best Dressed.” DNA Music Entertainment will perform a variety of songs which will include a SteelPan Drum accompaniment.

August 19 – “Classic Songs from Classic Films: Part 1” by Gordon James, Trumpeter & Vocalist, 10:30 a.m. Gordon James takes us on a musical journey back to the 1920’s through the 1960’s through classic songs from classic films. This program will include a brief description of the movie, the scene, the singer and interesting facts and trivia about the films and artists.

August 24 – “Shipwrecked: Learn About History Making Shipwrecks” by Meg Wastie, Curator of Education, Madison’s Museum of Early Trades and Crafts, 10:30 a.m. Learn about the history-making shipwrecks from Colonial times to present off the coast of New Jersey.

WHAT’S NEW

Dancercise – An innovative and fun way to exercise! This class incorporates dance moves to well-known music that will keep you moving. Starting with a “warm up” which helps avoid injury, you will dance to the beat of the music and finish with a “warm down.” Aerobic and low-impact great for the heart! Sneakers recommended. Held on Mondays at 10:30 a.m.

Circuit Training – Learn exercises designed to train and develop your muscles to make it easier and safer to perform everyday activities such as carrying groceries, gardening, bending to do household chores, etc. While using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, these exercises emphasize core stability, overall agility and develop muscle strength while also improving balance to reduce the risk of falls. Sneakers are required. Friday, 12:30 p.m.

August 12 – The Bridges of Manhattan will be presented by Kevin Woyce, author and speaker at 10:45 a.m. Twenty bridges link the island of Manhattan to the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and New Jersey. Kevin Woyce will tell the stories of how and why the most famous bridges were built, including the High Bridge of the Croton Aqueduct, the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg, Queensboro, Triborough Bridges and the George Washington Bridge. This program is illustrated with original photographs and historic images of Manhattan’s iconic bridges-past and present-and of the city they helped to shape.

August 25 – Montgomery’s own DJ Max DiFazio will provide music for dancing and entertainment.

August 22 – “Wellness Template for Life” by Dr. Sharon Joag, DPM, East Brunswick Foot Care, 10:30 a.m. Dr. Joag will present ways in which to incorporate positive aspects of life. In turn, these areas can help keep one more focused with motivation towards being satisfied, happy and healthy at an achievable level.

August 26 – Fourth Annual Hee-Haw Hoe Down with Entertainment by Richard Stillman, Actor, Musician, Singer, Storyteller, Tap Dancer & Teacher, 10:30 a.m. This truly anticipated annual event will be a combination of a country show filled with the music of western swing, which is sung and played on various instruments will include entertaining cowboy rope and hat tricks, western folklore/stories, clog dancing and line dance calling.

WHAT’S NEW

August 4 – Quail Brook Book Club, 10:30 a.m.. Our new book club is just starting and is open to all. We will get to know all of our fellow participants and receive our first book to read, “The Taming of the Shrew: A Literary Journey Through the Works of Shakespeare.” Please call for more information.

August 8 & 15 – “Filigree Handkerchief Clay Bowl,” by Barbara Gerson, Art 4 All, 10:30 a.m. This is a two day pottery project. The first day will involve creating a filigree bowl and the second day will involve coloring and glazing your piece. Advanced reservations are required by Wednesday, August 3.

August 17 – “Senior Farmers Market Presentation,” by Kate Domen, Diet Technician, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services, 10:15 a.m. Learn about the 10 Farmers Market locations and what to expect when you visit one. Kate will also share ways to purchase and handle local, fresh produce. Learn who is eligible to receive $25.00 worth of Free vouchers to buy Jersey Fresh produce. If you qualify, sign up and receive vouchers after the program. You must bring proof of age, residency and income.
