Olsen was a four-star recruit and an All-American when he played for his father Chris at Hills, but his tenure at the school ended badly and he has been in trouble ever since. Chris Olsen won eight state group championships while at Hills, but left the program in disgrace after nine players were charged with assaulting two Wayne Valley football players.

Olsen was charged with leaving the scene of an accident after he smashed his car into two vehicles and a tree in Wayne May 25, 2013. A police report on the incident stated that Olsen’s face appeared to have blood on it and that he “appeared to be under the influence of something.”

Olsen was expected to do great things at the University of Miami, Greg's alma mater, but he was suspended three times for violating team rules, demoted and left the school in 2014 after being charged with DUI.

He transferred to Towson University in Maryland, but was kicked off the team for violating team rules.

Olsen transferred to Riverside City College in California and passed for 13 touchdowns. That earned him the starting job at UNC Charlotte.
