Gambling, Murder, And More Explored In Wayne Author's New Novel
Author James Irwin, a Wayne resident, has released his second novel, a thriller titled "Lucky Guy."
WAYNE, NJ — Wayne resident James Irwin has released his second novel, "Lucky Guy," a psychological thriller.
The story explores the question of believing fate is on one's side even when facing life-or-death stakes. Matt Martinez, the protagonist, faces mounting problems, including gambling debt, family issues, and accidental murders.
Dinty W. Moore, editor of Brevity Magazine, described "Lucky Guy" as a "compelling tale of passion, poker, and unrealized dreams." Moore added that Irwin "writes tight prose with sharp edges, and his newest novel is a stark reminder that choices almost always have consequences." The narrative follows Matt as he attempts to outwit the police, his conscience, and a rival.

Irwin explained his intention to explore "moral luck," which concerns how individuals are praised or blamed for situations often beyond their control. He stated, "I was interested in the gray areas, with fluid ethical boundaries." Lori Robbins, a New Jersey mystery writer, noted that "the skill with which Irwin crafts this multi-layered character is one of the book’s great pleasures."
A unique aspect of the book is its anti-hero protagonist, Matt, who is neurodiverse. Irwin, who teaches a course on disability representation in media at William Paterson University, said, "I wanted to create a character who has undiagnosed autism, and do so in a non-stereotypical way." He clarified that this aspect is not explicitly mentioned in the book but informs the character's actions and thoughts.
