High Winds Knock Down Gas Station Canopy In North Jersey

A gasoline spill prompted a response from the county's hazmat agency following the canopy collapse.

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — This weekend’s high, chilly winds were strong enough to knock down the canopy of a Passaic County gas station.

On Saturday afternoon, the Delta gas station at 289 Wanaque Avenue in Pompton Lakes collapsed to the ground due to the winds.

The collapse caused gasoline to spill all over the area, prompting a response from the Passaic County Department of Health Services’ hazmat agency.

It’s not clear when the collapsed canopy will be removed at this time.

Wind gusts in New Jersey reached up to 60 miles per hour in parts of New Jersey this weekend, and caused temperatures well below freezing, with some areas seeing up to -40 degree wind chills.

“The wind has been very strong and very gusty,” said the Pompton Lakes Volunteer Fire Department. “Wind chills are going below zero, and skin will freeze very quickly.”
