1. 2 Wayne Teens Named 2027 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists (patch.com) — Wayne families can celebrate as two local high school students have been named 2027 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, standing out among about 1.2 million applicants nationwide. Abhay Raina of Diana C. Lobosco STEM Academy and Rayan Asaad of Wayne Hills High School will now submit detailed applications for a chance to become finalists and compete for several types of prestigious scholarships next year.
   

2. DePaul celebrates 70 years of excellence with new principal (beaconnj.org) — Wayne families connected to DePaul Catholic High School will see big changes this year as the school marks its 70th anniversary and welcomes new principal Stephen D. Trivino. The longtime Catholic educator plans to strengthen community ties, support faculty development, and keep faith and service central to student life throughout this milestone academic year.
   

3. Wayne Hills Football 2-0 Start Shows Toughness, Maturity Through Two Very Different Wins (tapinto.net) — Wayne Hills High School's football team is off to a 2-0 start, showing grit in two very different wins and setting up a big home test against West Milford on Thursday. Coach Wayne Demikoff praises his rebuilt offensive and defensive lines, as well as standout performances from quarterback James Wolf and junior playmaker Ethan Zacharski, while warning that a tough schedule still lies ahead.
   

4. Questions Remain for the Wayne Zoning Board After Third Hearing on the Proposed Mosque (tapinto.net) — Wayne's Zoning Board spent most of its latest hearing dissecting technical reports on a proposed 53,000‑square‑foot mosque and community center on Colfax Road, leaving many questions unresolved. The applicant's engineer will return October 19 to address wetlands, drainage, parking, and safety concerns before the public can finally ask questions, with traffic testimony likely pushed to a later meeting.
   

5. Rising antisemitism prompts tighter security at Jewish institutions (mycentraljersey.com) — Wayne's Jewish community is tightening security at Congregation Shomrei Torah as antisemitic incidents rise statewide, including a recent case involving a 22-year-old Wayne resident accused of plotting an attack. Local leaders emphasize resilience, while a volunteer security network and federal partnerships help synagogues across New Jersey protect worshippers during the High Holidays and beyond.
