Tax Levy Increase Proposed In 2023-2024 Wayne Schools Budget

The district is budgeting in 2023-24 for an increase in staff salaries as well as a 15 percent increase in employee benefits.

WAYNE, NJ — School officials updated Wayne taxpayers on proposed budget increased for the next school year, which includes a tax levy increase of more than 3.5 percent.

The district is in an overall positive financial condition and has a healthy $5.8 million surplus, according to a presentation made at the March 16 meeting.

The board also presented its tentative budget summary, which includes a possible tax levy increase of 3.53 percent for the 2023-24 year. A final public hearing on the budget will be in May.

Other needs included in the budget presentation are expanding special education programs, mental health systems, and resources for student support services and student transportation.

State aid is also increasing by 13.3 percent ($1.7 million). Under the proposed state budget, Wayne Township Public Schools would get $10,517,516, which is a 20.16 percent increase over this year's amount of $8,752,880. The Board of Education also approved a contract extension for Dr. Mark Toback at its March 16 meeting. Toback, who is in his ninth year with the district, will see his new contract run until 2027 and have incremental raises built in, the board of education attorney said later in the meeting.
