Remembering 9/11 Victims: Memorial Scheduled Sept. 11 In Wayne Township

The township will remember and honor seven Wayne residents, and all those who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

WAYNE, NJ — Wayne Township will gather to mark the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and remember the seven neighbors and friends who lost their lives 22 years ago.

The memorial is Monday, Sept. 11, 2023 at 6 p.m. It will be held at the Wayne Township 9/11 Memorial Park, located at Town Hall next to the library.

This permanent memorial, completed in 2008, is dedicated to the seven township residents who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001.

The township will remember and honor those seven people: Robert Deraney, Jean Caviasco DePalma, Daniel Afflitto, Paul Acquaviva, Barry Glick, Leo Roberts, and Gregg John Froehner. Froehner was a Wayne police dispatcher and a Port Authority policeman.

Most 9/11 victims were from either New York or New Jersey, where many who lived across the Hudson River from the World Trade Center recall the horror of watching the twin towers collapse from their homes in Hoboken and Jersey City.

More than 2,700 people died at the World Trade Center alone on 9/11, including the passengers of American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175. Another 184 were killed when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into The Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and 44 died on United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
