In addition to the second and third-tier prizewinning tickets sold, there were 482,343 New Jersey players who took home an estimated $2,670,609 in prizes ranging from $4 to $400, according to Lottery Executive Director Carole Hedinger.

The Powerball jackpot resets to $40 million for the next drawing to be held Saturday, Aug. 26 at 10:59 p.m.

“Congratulations to all of the lottery players who purchased winning tickets and to the retailers that sold them,” said Hedinger. “I’d like to remind players to purchase their Powerball tickets with a winning attitude and add Power Play to the ticket purchase. Power Play doubles the second prize from one million dollars to two million dollars and multiplies all of the seven lower prize sets available in the game by the number drawn that evening. The jackpot prize is not multiplied.

The jackpot is the second highest in both Powerball history and all North American games’ history. If the winning ticket is purchased as an annuity, the estimated $758.7 million jackpot prize will be paid out over 30 years. The first payment would be $10,536,005 and the 30th payment would be $43,367,623. The cash value is $443.3 million.

“The excitement and public awareness created by the increased jackpot is a good time to remind players to play responsibly. Yearlong, the New Jersey Lottery promotes responsible play through its cooperation with the Council on Compulsive Gambling of NJ and by promoting the helpline 1-800-GAMBLER phone number on all Lottery marketing and advertising material. I will once again remind players to bet with their heads and not over it," said Hedinger.

Powerball Is Over $700 Million: Here's Why You Shouldn't Be Impressed

This is the largest jackpot since the Jan. 13, 2016 drawing when three tickets split the $1.586 billion prize. The jackpot-winning tickets were sold in California, Florida and Tennessee. Wednesday’s drawing was the 21st since the Powerball jackpot was last hit on June 10 in California. That jackpot was $447.8 million.

New Jersey Lottery players have been very lucky in this game: In the history of the Powerball, New Jerseyans have won six jackpots. In total, New Jersey Lottery players have won more than $1.28 billion in prizes, according to the New Jersey Lottery.

Outside of the jackpot, New Jersey players have won millions of dollars during the 21 drawing run. There have been two $1 million and 27 $50,000 prizewinning tickets sold. In total, 1,080,889 New Jersey Lottery tickets won a total of $9,433,291.

The New Jersey Lottery has had seven jackpot winning tickets for six draws (two NJ tickets received a share of one jackpot) since adding Powerball in January 2010. New Jersey’s most recent win was on May 7, 2016 when the Smith Family won $429.6 million with a cash value of $284 million. They have created the Smith Family Foundation to assist people in the Trenton area and abroad with education and other good causes.

Here's how to play:

  • The jackpot - won by matching all five white balls in any order and the red Powerball - is either an annuitized prize paid out over 29 years (30 payments counting the first immediate payment) or a cash lump sum payment.
  • If you choose the cash, then you get the cash, pay the tax, and can invest what is left over. If you choose the annuity, then we can invest the cash amount pre-tax, less an immediate first payment (more to invest means more earnings).
  • With the annuity, you get an annual payment that is increased by 5 percent each year to keep up with the cost of living.
  • The second prize - won by matching five white balls in any order - is $1 million paid in cash (no annuity option). You win by matching at least three white ball numbers. Any time you match the red Powerball, you win a prize.
  • Power Play is a special add-on feature that allows a winner to increase the original prize amounts (except the jackpot).
  • Each ticket costs $2.
  • The Power Play option costs $1 extra and must be selected when you buy your Powerball ticket. Powerball players with the Power Play option winning any prize other than the jackpot will win a larger cash prize.
  • The Match 5+0 prize with Power Play option grows to $2million paid in a cash lump sum (no annuity option is offered). All other lower prizes (below Match 5) will be multiplied by a number that we draw (2X, 3X, 4X, or 5X).
