Woman Critical After Crashing Into Pole In West Windsor: Police

WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, NJ —A Camden County woman is in critical condition after crashing into a pole on Route 1 in West Windsor Thursday night, according to police.

The 48-year-old woman was driving a 2016 Toyota Rav4 south on Route 1 in the middle lane at Washington Road when she went into cardiac arrest, West Windsor police said Friday morning.

Her car drifted into the right lane and ultimately left the road, where it struck a utility pole, police said. She was unable to attempt to avoid hitting the pole as a result of her medical condition, police said.

Police were called to the scene just after 10 p.m. They found the car in its final resting position in the right lane of Route 1 South with the driver trapped inside, police said. Police broke into the car through the windows in an attempt to save her.

They found the woman unconscious, unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. West Windsor Division of Fire and Emergency Services Squad 45 responded to the scene and attempted to revive her.

She was ultimately taken to Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center. After initial treatment there, she was flown to Robert Wood Johnson New Brunswick Trauma Center's Intensive Care Unit, where she remained in critical condition Friday morning.

Police didn't identify the woman. The utility pole and the woman's car were both heavily damaged in the crash. Route 1 South was closed for about three hours between Washington Road and Alexander Street.

West Windsor Volunteer Fire Company (Station #43), Princeton Junction Volunteer Fire Company (Station #44) and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Serious Collision Response Team (SCRT) also responded to the scene.
