West Windsor Bridge Expansion Work Wraps Up After 1 Year

Replacement of the bridge on Cranbury Road over Bear Brook in West Windsor has been completed and the bridge is reopened.

WEST WINDSOR, NJ — After about a year of work, a bridge in West Windsor reopened this week.

Replacement of the bridge on Cranbury Road over Bear Brook in West Windsor has been completed and the bridge is reopened, the Mercer County Department of Transportation and Infrastructure announced this week. The bridge is located between Stobbe Lane and Sunnydale Way, north of Princeton-Hightstown Road.

The former bridge was four spans and consisted of simply supported, prestressed voided slab beams on steel piles. The bridge was in poor condition due to substructure defects. It was categorized as Structurally Deficient with a Sufficiency Rating of 48.2 out of 100.

The new bridge is 125’-8” long by 51’-4” wide. It is a two span bridge supported on full height abutments and a hammerhead pier. The proposed cross section consists of two 12-foot wide travel lanes, two 6-foot wide shoulders and two 6-foot wide sidewalks and 4 rail bridge railing.

The superstructure consists of curved steel beams with a reinforced concrete composite deck. The substructure is supported on pile foundations with permanent scour sheeting.

Marbro Inc. of Montclair was the successful low bidder at $3,547,117.00. The contract was awarded on Aug. 10, 2017, and was funded through the New Jersey Department of Transportation Division of Local Aid.

With the re-opening of Cranbury Road, traffic patterns that were in effect before the bridge closure are expected to resume. However, intersection modifications, including restriping of Princeton-Hightstown Road and installation of a traffic signal at Cranbury Road and Clarksville Road will remain in place.

Additionally, Mercer County has installed a new traffic signal at the intersection of Millstone Road and Cranbury Road, which is expected to be activated shortly after Cranbury Road is re-opened to normal traffic flow.
