West Windsor-Plainsboro High Schools Among Nation's Best: US News

U.S. News & World Report released its annual list of best high schools in the country.

WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, NJ — Both West Windsor-Plainsboro School District high schools are among the top 20 high schools in New Jersey and among the best in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2018 rankings of best high schools in the country.

West Windsor-Plainsboro South is 11th in the state and No. 264 in the country in the 2018 best high school rankings that were released on Wednesday. West Windsor-Plainsboro North is 20th in the state and No. 420 in the country.

The rankings evaluate over 20,500 public high schools. U.S. News identified schools that best serve all students and assessed how prepared students are for college-level work. Schools are also recognized with gold, silver and bronze medals with gold indicating the greatest level of college readiness. Both schools were recognized with gold medals.

“Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement coursework and exams,” U.S. News said about West Windsor-Plainsboro South. “The AP participation rate at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South is 72 percent. The student body makeup is 49 percent male and 51 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 71 percent.”

Ninety-five percent of students who take the AP test pass. The school’s College Readiness Index is over 68 percent, and its reading proficiency is 63 percent. Mathematics proficiency is at 56 percent. The school’s total enrollment is listed at 1,591 students, and the student to teacher ratio is 15:1. The graduation rate is 97 percent.

“The AP participation rate at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North is 64 percent,” according to U.S. News. “The student body makeup is 51 percent male and 49 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 71 percent.”

Ninety-five percent of students who take the AP test pass. The school’s College Readiness Index is over 61 percent, and its reading proficiency is 68 percent. Mathematics proficiency is at 56 percent. The school’s total enrollment is listed at 1,414 students, and the student to teacher ratio is 12:1. The graduation rate is 98 percent.

To determine the rankings, U.S. News teamed up with the social science research firm RTI International. A variety of data sources, including the Common Core of Data, College Board and the International Baccalaureate, were used.

A four-step process was used to rank all eligible schools. The first two steps were to determine whether students were performing better than statistically expected in the state and whether minority were performing at or better than the state average for minority students, which was the second step. The third step required schools to meet or surpass a certain graduation benchmark and the final step was to determine college readiness. (You can read the full methodology here.)
