When Residents Speak, They Deserve Respect — Even When We Disagree

Why I voted no on the B-2A zoning change and why respectful public discussion matters in West Windsor.

Disagreement is part of local democracy. Respect for residents who participate should be non-negotiable.


At the March 9 West Windsor Township Council meeting, the Council approved a zoning change allowing a stand-alone car wash in the B-2A Neighborhood Center district. I was the only member of Council to vote no.

My decision was based on concerns about consistency with the Township’s Master Plan. But beyond the policy itself, I left the meeting thinking about something equally important: how we engage with residents who take the time to participate in the public process.

Residents came prepared. They asked thoughtful questions. They shared their perspectives on traffic, environmental impact, and community character. That kind of engagement is exactly what local government should encourage.

Providing data, analysis, and rationale in support of a position is a critical part of decision-making. But when discussion shifts away from the issue and toward dismissing those who are raising questions, it undermines the purpose of that discussion.

When residents ask questions about a policy decision, they deserve clear answers about the policy itself, not criticism of the people raising the questions.
