West Deptford Sees 1st Coronavirus Death Since July

As of Wednesday, 441 West Deptford residents had tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 18 have died.

WEST DEPTFORD, NJ — The second wave of the coronavirus pandemic is bringing new cases to New Jersey, and the first casualty of the disease to West Deptford since the summer.

An 83-year-old West Deptford man has died after testing positive for the coronavirus, Gloucester County officials announced on Wednesday.

He was the first West Deptford resident to die after testing positive for the coronavirus since a man in his 80s died of the virus in July. As of Wednesday, 441 West Deptford residents had tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 18 have died.

He was among four new deaths announced countywide on Wednesday. A 99-year-old Washington Township woman, an 84-year-old Paulsboro woman, and a 30-year-old East Greenwich woman have also died after testing positive for the disease. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 253 Gloucester County residents have died after testing positive for the coronavirus.

The county also announced 144 new cases on Wednesday, bringing the county’s total to 7,828 since the beginning of the pandemic. Trace investigations are underway in all new cases.

Six of the new cases involved West Deptford residents. The following information is known about the West Deptford cases:

  • A 55-year-old man;
  • A 61-year-old woman;
  • A 13-year-old girl;
  • A 14-year-old girl;
  • A 51-year-old woman; and
  • An 18-year-old man.

As of Wednesday, Gloucester County has conducted 86,911 total tests. Of these cases, 79,083 have come back negative. Gloucester County is expecting the number of cases to increase. Officials remind residents that social distancing is critical in flattening the curve and reducing cases.
