27 Injured, Hospitalized In Head-On Crash With Car, NJ Transit Bus In Union Township

The driver of the BMW, NJ Transit bus driver, and 20-plus bus passengers were all taken to various area hospitals, said Union Police.

UNION, NJ — At least 27 people were injured and hospitalized following a head-on crash involving a car and NJ Transit bus on Friday morning, said Township of Union NJ Police Department.

At about 7:20 a.m., multiple 911 calls reported a head-on crash on Stuyvesant Avenue near Pleasant Parkway in Union Township.

Union Township Police Officers went to the crash and saw that a BMW had crossed over onto the southbound side of Stuyvesant Avenue and hit a New Jersey Transit bus, said police.

The bus was operating on the 94 line between Bloomfield and Linden, said NJ Transit.

The driver of the BMW was injured as were numerous people on the bus.

A total of 21 people on the bus requested medical attention, said NJ Transit.

A second bus, also operating on the 94 line, was behind the accident and had to stop suddenly. The second bus was not involved in the accident, but four people on the second bus sustained minor injuries that were evaluated on scene, said NJ Transit.

Officers called for help and requested mutual aid for the large amount of injuries. The Union Fire Department coordinated the medical aid response with Union County Mutual Aid coordinators.

The BMW driver was taken to University Hospital due to his injuries. The 20-plus passengers and the bus driver also were taken to various area hospitals, said police.

The bus passenger’s injuries included a broken ankle, facial injuries, neck pain, and general trauma, said police.

The road was closed to allow the multiple ambulances to stage and then take those in need to the hospitals.

Officers from the Traffic Bureau are investigating and will determine the cause of this crash.
