God's Name as a Trump Card

Years ago, in the dark ages before multiple television sets and DVR, my sister and brother got into an argument over which show we would watch on the one television in our home. Cleverly, my sister bolstered her argument by saying that mom said she wanted us to watch her show.

My brother replied, "Really? Why?"

With great authority, my sister answered, "She's been following the show. Since she is going to miss it, she wants us to watch it so we can tell her what happens."

With that, my creative, quick-thinking sister prevailed over her younger brother.  I emphasize "creative" because mom never said that.

People do this with God's name too. They use God's name as a trump card to win an argument.

This coming weekend, at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield, we will explore the practical wisdom in the command not to misuse God's name.

We invite everyone to worship with us.  We have a casual service in the chapel at 5 p.m. Saturdays, two traditional worship services at 8 and 10 a.m., and Wired4worship, a contemporary worship experience at 9:45 in Westminster Hall.

Learn more by checking out our websites:  westfieldpc.org and wired4worship.com.  You may also call the church at (908) 233-0301.
