Hero Cop Saves Infant Girl After She Fell In Union County Pool

Elizabeth Police Officer Leo Nunes performed CPR and revived the 1-year-old baby girl who had been underwater for a minute and a half.

ELIZABETH, NJ — An Elizabeth Police Officer is being called a hero after he revived an unresponsive one-year-old baby girl who fell into a pool on Sunday.

At around 5:33 p.m. a 911 call came in reporting a 1-year-old baby girl fell into a homeowner's pool on Morristown Road and was underwater for about a minute and a half, Ruby Contreras acting Public Information Officer for the City of Elizabeth said.

When Elizabeth Police Officer Leo Nunes arrived at the scene, the baby had already been pulled out of the water but was unresponsive, Contreras said.

Nunes performed CPR and was able to bring the baby back. She was transported to Beth Israel Hospital where she stayed for 24 hours. She is currently doing well, Contreras said.

Nunes has been a patrol officer for more than 20 years. Contreras called him a "hero."
