Upgrades Continue At Westfield's Windsor Park And Playground

WESTFIELD, NJ — More upgrades and improvements are happening at Windsor Park and its playground in Westfield.

Township Administrator Jim Gildea updated the Town Council on the progress of the second phase of improvements at the park at 238 Windsor Ave. at the Aug. 15 meeting.

The second phase of improvements included a new playground, a new shade structure, new basketball backboards and hoops, new padding on the poles for the basketball hoops, a new fence for the whole complex, new picnic tables, and new garbage cans.

"Right now we are at a point where a lot of the heavy stuff has been done so now we have a lot of site work and restoration to do," said Gildea. "Grass planting, stone and dust, drainage. That will all hopefully be done in the next few weeks."

Both phases of the project were covered under grants that the Town applied for and were granted in 2022 and 2023. Additional funds were also pulled from the Town's park improvement fund.

Some of that money will be reimbursed to the Town through a deal Westfield worked out with the Westfield Crossing Development.

The deal included the development making a contribution to improve Windsor Park.

"That contribution while it will come, has not come yet because it is contingent upon certificates of occupancy for that development. So the town moved forward anyway with this park improvement funding and grant funding to make improvements to Windsor park both last year and this year," said Gildea.

Gildea said all of the park improvement work is expected to be completed by Labor Day.

"It's still rough right now because there is still a lot of restoration that has to be done but a lot of the installation really looks good and it's a nice addition there," said Gildea.
