Man Pulls Out, Points Crossbow At Patron At Westfield Business: Police

Westfield Police also reported fraud and arrests for DWI and outstanding warrants in the latest blotter.

WESTFIELD, NJ — A Scotch Plains man was charged after he was accused of pulling out and pointing a crossbow at a person in Westfield last week.

On April 3 at 10:12 p.m., an altercation broke out inside a business in the Westfield Central Business District on the 100 block of East Broad Street.

During this altercation, Marvin Basilio-Zapata, 32, of Scotch Plains, pulled out a handheld crossbow and pointed it toward a business patron, causing alarm, said police.

Basilio-Zapata was later arrested on April 4 and charged with possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Basilio-Zapata was taken to the Union County Jail pending a First Appearance court date.

Westfield Police Blotter – March 31 to April 6:

On April 2 at 1:40 a.m.: Officers Marlow and Scanlon conducted a motor vehicle stop in the area of West North Avenue and Dudley Avenue. After an investigation, the driver of the vehicle, Rodney Christian, 59, of Scotch Plains, was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. He was taken to Westfield Police Headquarters where he was processed and released to a sober adult.

On April 3 at 7 p.m.: A resident of the 500 block of Carleton Road reported being a victim of fraud. An unknown person claiming to be a representative from Santander Bank contacted the complainant asking for security answers. The complainant then saw a fraudulent withdrawal from their Santander account for $599 the next day.

On April 4 at 11:56 a.m.: A resident of the 200 block of Harrison Avenue reported being the victim of fraud. The complainant said he was trying to sell a ladder rack and toolbox for $600. He was contacted by a potential buyer who sent him a fake $600 check via U.S. Mail.

On April 4 at 3 p.m.: A resident of the 100 Block of Sussex Street reported an incident of fraud. The resident stated that when reviewing their annual credit report they noticed unauthorized accounts from Verizon Wireless. Upon contacting Verizon Wireless, it was learned this account was closed with an outstanding balance of $5,000 and only connected to the complainant through their social security number.

On April 6 at 2:06 p.m.: Jaelynn Quittley, 24, of Belleville, was placed under arrest on the strength of an outstanding warrant out of Newark Municipal Court. Quittley was placed under arrest after an investigation was conducted as a result of a motor vehicle stop on New Providence Road and Dunn Parkway in Mountainside. Quittley signed the appropriate paperwork acknowledging her new court date and was released from the scene on her own recognizance.

On April 6 at 11:53 p.m.: Officers Pollock and Perconte arrested Vincent Fumero, 39, Garwood, on an outstanding Union County Sheriff's warrant with bail set at $9,753. Fumero was processed and taken to the Union County Jail in lieu of bail.
