Medical Director Appointed To Serve Westfield Police

WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield has appointed Dr. Matt Letizia to the position of Medical Director for the Westfield Police Department.

Letizia will provide the police department and its officers with medical oversight, direction, and control.

"The Westfield Police Department responds to about 2,000 emergency medical calls for service each year. Many of those calls are critical medical emergencies, and the actions of this agency’s officers often make the difference between life and death for many persons," according to the Town of Westfield, NJ Police Department.

Letizia is a board-certified emergency medicine physician at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth. He also serves as the Medical Director for more than two dozen New Jersey police, fire, and EMS agencies, including the Elizabeth Police and Fire-EMS Departments.

In 2021, Letizia was named by the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians as the nation’s EMS Physician of the Year for his performance in the field of emergency medical services.

In 2018, Letizia was named by the New Jersey Department of Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services and New Jersey Emergency Services Council as EMS Physician of the Year.

No other physician has previously ever been awarded both of these national honors.

On Sept. 19, Letizia was named 2023 National EMS Medical Director of the Year NAEMT - National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians in New Orleans, Louisiana.
