Director of Christian Education at Presbyterian Church in Westfield Named
Westfield resident Christine Treger was recently appointed as Director of Christian Education at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield (PCW). Ms. Treger holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and a Masters of Divinity. She has experience as a Minister of Education, Youth, and Families and served as a Chaplain at the Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. Ms. Treger has served as a Director of Christian Education in other Presbyterian churches in New Jersey and was the Interim Director of Christian Education at PCW.
Ms. Treger shared the joy she feels by working with youth. “The moments of transformation children have are beyond exciting. Their enthusiasm is infectious.” At Easter time when she was teaching a lesson on the ascension of Christ and one child asked, “Well, where did Jesus go?” another answered without skipping a beat, “That’s easy - in our hearts!” She explained that children can “intuitively explain things better than adults.”

This past summer she spearheaded the Vacation Bible Camp at the Westfield church that saw a doubling in the attendance from last year. On Sunday mornings, she is taking the nursery school age children through 3rd grade through the “Awesome Adventures: God’s Amazing Son” series where Bible stories are illustrated through crafts.
Her goal at the church is simple. “I want both parents and children to know that they can be comfortable here. It is a place where they are cared for and nurtured.”

Other experiences germane to her new position include present/past membership in the Elizabeth Presbytery’s Education and Ministries Unit, Presbyterians Organized in Nurture and Teaching for Elizabeth Presbytery, The Eastern Region of Association of Church Educators and Women’s Retreat leader. She also served as the Adult Christian Education facilitator at the PCW. Through the school year, Ms. Treger leads the program that she started nine years ago, the mid-week program for K-5th grades called COW, Church on Wednesday.
