Open Spot Available On Westfield Board Of Education

The Westfield Board of Education is seeking applicants to fill a 6-month vacancy through December.

Westfield, NJ -- This is your chance to become more involved in your child's and the community's children's education.

The Westfield Board of Education is now accepting applications to fill an open spot on the board through December.

The position opened up after Mitch Slater resigned. Slate was elected in 2010 and his last day of his tem will be on June 30.

Applicants would fill his position for the six-months and also have a chance to run for a new three-year term which begins on January 2017 followed by an election process on Nov. 8, 2016.

Any eligible Westfield resident apply for the open position, who will then be interviewed by the board in a closed meeting on June 14. On June 21, the board will vote to select a candidate during the open meeting.

The new member is expected to be sworn in by early July.

To be considered, the qualifications for serving on the board are:

  • He/She is a citizen of the United States of America;
  • He/She must be at least 18 years of age;
  • He/She must be able to read and write;
  • He/She must be a resident of Westfield;
  • He/She is a registered voter in Westfield; and
  • He/She must undergo a criminal history background check to ensure they are not disqualified from membership due to a conviction of a crime or offense.

Westfield citizens interested in filling the 6-month board vacancy through December 2016 should submit their resume or letter of intent to Board Secretary Dana Sullivan, Westfield Public Schools, 302 Elm Street, Westfield, NJ 07090 by 4 p.m. on May 31.

New Board members are required to attend training in each year of their first three year term. All Board members are required to annually complete financial disclosure forms and sign a pledge to abide by the Code of Ethics.
