Range Rover With Keys Inside Stolen In Westfield
A garage door opener was also stolen from another unlocked vehicle in Westfield last week, police said.
WESTFIELD, NJ — Car thefts and burglaries, warrant arrests and more were reported last week in Westfield.
Westfield released the police blotter for incidents from April 16 to April 22.:
On April 17 at 12:27 p.m.: A resident reported a burglary and theft from his motor vehicle on the 100 block of Boynton Ave. Between April 16 at 4 p.m. and April 17 at 8:30 a.m., someone entered his vehicle, which was parked unlocked in his driveway. Once inside the vehicle, someone stole a garage opener and fled the scene. The owner estimated the value of the stolen garage opener to be $30.

On April 19 at 8 a.m.: The owner of a business located on the 200 block of East South Avenue reports that someone tried to use her company’s checking account number to withdraw funds using fraudulent checks. The checks were attempted to be cashed in various locations throughout the country using several unknown names on the physical fraudulent checks. No monetary loss has occurred at this time. It is not known at this time how the account was compromised.
On April 19 at 10:03 p.m.: Bryan Mercedes, 21, of Elizabeth, was placed under arrest at Union Police Department on the strength of an ATS warrant E22 3051 in the amount of $1,000 issued by the Westfield Municipal Court. He was taken to Westfield Police Headquarters where he was processed and released after posting full bail pending a new court date.

On April 21 at 3:19 a.m.: A 2016 Range Rover was parked in the street of the 400 block of Quantuck Lane and was stolen at around 2:30 a.m. on April 21. The suspects arrived in a 2019 Hyundai Sonata and left that vehicle when they entered the Range Rover which had its keys inside of the vehicle and fled the area.
On April 22 at 10:02 a.m.: John Engel, 35, of Matawan, was placed under arrest on the strength of a $130 traffic warrant out of Linden Municipal Court pursuant to a motor vehicle stop on North Avenue near Edgewood Avenue. Engel was processed and released on his own recognizance at the scene of the motor vehicle stop.
