Smash-And-Grab Car Burglaries Reported In Westfield

A resident also reported someone broke the glass of a rear patio door to burglarize their home, according to the police blotter.

WESTFIELD, NJ — Smash-and-grab burglaries, fraud, and a home burglary were reported recently in Westfield.

Westfield Police Blotter – Feb. 23 to March 1:

On Feb. 23 at 11:05 a.m.: A resident in the 500 block of Springfield Avenue reports that someone accessed their computer indicating they needed to contact technical support. The person then deceived the victim into removing funds from the resident's account. The victim then used these funds to obtain cryptocurrency at the direction of "tech support". The actor(s) then accessed the cryptocurrency account and emptied it. Currently, the victim has suffered a monetary loss. The resident stated that they are unaware who actually accessed their computer or how they created the "alert" which led them to contact the actor(s).

On Feb. 24 at 12:43 p.m.: A representative of a business in the 800 block of W. South Avenue reports that someone improperly cashed/deposited a check that was written to a business. It is believed that the actor(s) intercepted the check in the mail before it reaching the intended business. The actor(s) then cashed/deposited the check without the funds going to the intended business. The business has suffered a monetary loss.

On Feb. 24 at 8:57 p.m.: Westfield Police responded to the 100 block of Ferris Place on the report of a smash and grab motor vehicle burglary. Once there, Officers spoke with the owner of a 2020 Honda Civic who stated that he had parked his vehicle in the roadway about an hour and a half prior and had come back to find his driver-side front window shattered and his wallet containing his driver license, credit cards and cash stolen.

On Feb. 25 at 5:15 p.m.: Westfield Police was dispatched to Tamaques Park on the report of a smash and grab motor vehicle burglary. A 2022 Chevy Equinox had its front passenger side window shattered, and a light blue colored "Lulu Lemon" satchel valued at around $68 was stolen.

On Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.: A resident of the 900 block of Central Avenue reported a burglary and theft from her residence. The victim stated that while she was away from her home, an unknown burglar(s) made a forced entry into her residence by breaking the glass on the rear patio door. Once inside the residence, burglar(s) rummaged through the home and stole miscellaneous items.
