The most valuable gift you have is time. Without time every other gift is cut short and diminished. But who has enough time? Many of us feel constantly rushed and pressured into a constant fever of activity.
The Sabbath (one day of rest in seven) is God's gift of time. Like a governor gear on an engine it is designed to slow us down. It is supposed to help us find balance in and perspective on our lives. God invites us to rest and reconnect with God, with loved ones and with our purpose in life. In keeping the Sabbath we learn that we do not live to work, but work to live.
Yet, let's fact it, it is hard for us to accept this gift. It is hard to think we can take the time. And even when we do try to rest, our minds rush ahead to projects yet unfinished.
The Reverend Barbara Brown Taylor says that although the Sabbath is a gift, we have such a hard time keeping it that God had to make it a command.
This weekend the Reverend Mike Samson will talk about God's gift of the Sabbath as he continues a sermon series, Sign Posts to Freedom.
