Westfield Forms Public Arts Commission

The goal is to coordinate an approach to using public space, officials said.

WESTFIELD, NJ - A new commission has been formed to help realize artistic possibilities for the Westfield community.

The Westfield Town Council unanimously voted to adopt General Ordinance 2142 to amend and supplement the Town Code to allow for the establishment of a Public Arts Commission.

“I am thrilled to see this ordinance adopted to allow for a Public Arts Commission, which paves the way for a more coordinated and comprehensive approach to utilizing art in the Town’s public space,” said Mayor Shelley Brindle. “The possibilities for how public art can help further improve Westfield are tremendous, as we are already seeing with the upcoming mural project on the South Avenue train underpass.”

Brindle added that, in the near future, there will be a call for volunteers to help fill key roles on the Public Arts Commission.

“As with all projects we have undertaken, I am confident that the diversity of talent and ideas among our residents will help the Commission take shape and make a positive community impact,” she said.
