Westfield High School Senior Dies In Car Crash In Watchung Reservation
Westfield High School Acting Principal Tom Paterson shared the tragic news of Brandon Genlot's death with the community on Tuesday.
WESTFIELD, NJ — A Westfield High School senior died in a car accident in Scotch Plains on Monday night, Union County Police told Patch.
The Union County Police identified the student and fatal victim of the crash as Brandon Genlot of Westfield.
On Monday at 7:30 p.m., the Union County Police were called to a motor vehicle accident in the Watchung Reservation on Sky Top Drive in Scotch Plains.

Union County Police Officers found one vehicle and the surrounding area on fire, said Union County Officer in Charge Captain John DaSilva.
Scotch Plains Fire Department extinguished the fire.

An investigation found that the vehicle had hit a tree and caught fire, said DaSilva.
One person was found deadinside the vehicle. The victim was later identified as Genlot on Tuesday.
The accident is under investigation by the Union County Police Department.
Acting Principal Tom Paterson sent a letter to the school community sharing the heartbreaking news about Brandon Genlot.
"I wanted to make you aware so that we may come together to support our students, staff, and Brandon’s family during this time of sorrow. His family has granted permission for us to share the news of their loss, as it deeply affects our entire school community," said Paterson.
Genlot was repeatedly named to the school's honor roll and also played volleyball for the high school.
The high school administration and counseling team are providing additional support resources for students and staff.
School officials said they are offering support for the students.
"This morning, we brought together groups by grade level to gently share the news. This provided staff and students a space to begin processing their feelings together," said Paterson.
The school is coordinating with the Traumatic Loss Coalition for Youth, along with counselors throughout the district, to offer extra support for those who may need it.
Spaces and counselors are available throughout the school day for anyone seeking these resources, and students and staff are encouraged to reach out for support if needed.
There are also online resources available on the district website to help cope and have conversations about this tragic loss, including "The Do’s and Don’ts of Talking with a Child about Death," and "Coping with the Death of a Friend."
"Please keep Brandon's family in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. Together, we will honor his memory and support one another," said Paterson.
