Westfield Students Honored By National Merit Program

WESTFIELD, NJ - Twenty Westfield High School seniors have been recognized for their exceptional academic promise as Commended Students in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are:

Although they will not continue in the 2019 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

On Sept. 14, the Westfield Public School District announced that four of its Westfield High School seniors – Austin Chen, Madeline Reynders, Edward Xing, and Zachary Youssef – are semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

The nationwide pool of approximately 16,000 semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, according to the organization. They include the highest scoring entrants in each state and are eligible to apply for National Merit scholarships.

The program honors students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
