Blue Devils win over Panthers, 10 to 7

The Westfield Blue Devils took home the state championship title last night as they triumphed over Bridgewater-Raritan’s Panthers with a 10 to 7 win.

This is the first state championship game Westfield has won since 1977 when they ousted Barringer High School in Newark.

“Huge win for WHS football,” Tweeted Peter Renwick, Westfield High School principal, who attended the game. “Congratulations to our State Champs!! We are so proud of all of you.”

It was a match of the undefeated. Westfield and Bridgewater-Raritan both came into the game with an 11-0 record. Yet Westfield edged them out to keep their undefeated streak going once again.

The two squads last met in the first round of the 2014 NJSIAA North II Group V Play-offs with Westfield edging the Panthers 24-14.

“It was a great night for Westfield,” DeSarno said. “It was just a memorable night.”
