WHS Thespians Capture Rising Star Awards

Sweeney Todd wins for outstanding musical during annual awards.

Sweeney Todd may be the demon barber of Fleet Street, but he was a good luck charm for Westfield High School students.

Westfield High School captured 11 awards during the annual Papermill Playhouse Rising Star awards, including top honors for outstanding overall production of a musical. The award was for Sweeney Todd, the high school’s annual spring musical.

In addition to the top musical honors, several students at the high school grabbed individual honors. Rebecca Skowron won outstanding performance by an actress in a supporting role for her portrayal of “beggar woman” in Sweeney Todd. Peter Carmo won outstanding performance in a featured role for his role as “Adolfo Picelli.” Michael Kimmel and Lisa Weinshrott won for outstanding lighting achievement.

Jill Salisbury, the assistant technical director, and Tzetelina Garneva, the stage manager, both won student achievement awards. Salisbury also won the Scaramouche Technical Theatre Scholarship and Christopher Morrissey won the Investors Savings Bank Foundation scholarship.

Sweeney Todd director won for outstanding direction and WHS art teacher Roy Chambers won for outstanding scenic achievement.
