Rho Gamma Omega Hosts MLK Day of Service Event Honoring Dr. King’s Legacy Through Community Action

On January 19, 2026, the Rho Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, through its Sisterly Relations and CHIPP committees, hosted an MLK Day of Service event dedicated to honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through service, unity, and meaningful action.

More than 100 community members gathered for the event, which was held in partnership with the West Orange African Heritage Organization and Nassan’s Place. Together, the organizations created a space centered on inclusion, cultural awareness, and community care, with a special focus on supporting families with neurodivergent children.
The chapter was honored to welcome several distinguished guests, including New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dale Caldwell, New Jersey Comptroller Shirley Emehelu, and members of Governor Mikie Sherrill’s staff and volunteer team, all of whom joined residents in recognizing the importance of service driven leadership.
The program featured powerful youth and community centered presentations that reflected Dr. King’s vision and call to service. Student orator Maxwell Michel delivered an inspiring speech, courtesy of the Alpha Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated®. Spoken word artist Imamu Mayfield also captivated attendees with a moving presentation highlighting Dr. King’s words and enduring impact.
A key component of the day was a sensory friendly food drive designed to meet the specific needs of families affected by autism and sensory sensitivities. Through the generosity of attendees and community partners, more than 1,200 sensory friendly food items were collected. Volunteers assembled over 100 donation bags, which were provided directly to attendees and Nassan’s Place to support families of neurodivergent children.
The event also included fellowship, reflection, and opportunities for attendees to engage in service together, reinforcing Dr. King’s belief that meaningful change begins at the community level.
Rho Gamma Omega Chapter extends sincere gratitude to every partner, volunteer, youth participant, and community member who helped make the day impactful and memorable.
