War Horse on Broadway: Macaroni Kid's Review
Thinking about bringing the kids to the theater? Read Macaroni Kid's review of the Broadway hit War Horse.
A few weeks ago, I was invited to attend War Horse at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in New York City. I had high expectations of the show, given its five Tony awards - including Best Play - and the rave reviews it has gotten from critics. I have seen many Broadway shows in my life, and I have to say that War Horse has easily made it to my top five all-time favorites (Les Miserable, The Lion King, Rent, and Phantom of the Opera being the other four). The acting, staging, lights and creative puppetry were masterfully woven together to create a captivating, emotionally complex, and artistically beautiful live production.
War Horse is the uplifting story of a young boy Albert Narracott who develops a strong bond with a hunting horse Joey. When World War I breaks out, Billy and Joey are separated. We follow the trials and tribulations of Joey as he serves both the British and Germans, as well as Albert who enlists in the British Army to find his beloved horse.
The life-sized horse puppets were impressive on stage, thanks to the craftsmanship and incredible coordination of the cast. The horses breathed, galloped, twitched and neighed as if they were alive. And it was truly an amazing sight when the characters rode on them!
If there is one show currently on Broadway that is educational and entertaining for children ages 8 and up, War Horse is your best bet. For more information about War Horse and to purchase tickets, click here.
