HIGHER EDUCATION CONSULTANTS TO DISCUSS COLLEGE ADMISSION TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS
The Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA), a not-for-profit professional organization, will hold its 15th annual conference June 18-20 at the Hamilton Park Conference Center, in Florham Park, Morris County, New Jersey. Claire Cafaro, a local independent college advisor os co- chair of this national conference.
More than 200 members from throughout the United States and abroad will discuss and debate ideas, trends, and opportunities in the college admission process. HECA’s mission is to help students realize their full educational potential in transition from secondary schools to undergraduate and graduate programs, with particular focus on access and equity.
With the theme “Cultivating Opportunities in the Garden State,” the conference will feature keynote speakers Dave Marcus and Gwyeth Smith, authors and subject of the book Acceptance, A Legendary Guidance Counselor Helps Seven Kids Find the Right Colleges—and Find Themselves. Other topics include financing the costs of college, student-athlete recruiting and eligibility, ethics in the consulting business, understanding the college transfer process, and graduate school admissions. Another session among the 27 offered will focus on New York and Pennsylvania public institutions.
In addition, Lynn O’Shaughnessy, author and consultant, will debate Luke Skurman, founder of College Prowler, on the college search process from two perspectives: data-based and student viewpoints.
Workshops include “Hotspots, Hooks and Hidden Agendas: An Inside Look at College Admissions,” presented by Peter Van Buskirk, consumer advocate, author, and former college dean of admission; and “Growing Your Business and Developing Your Professionalism,” by Francine Block, contributor to numerous publications and an active participant in the National Association for College Admission Counseling.
Other conference activities include a college and vendor fair at Drew University, dinner at Fairleigh Dickinson University, a Hudson Valley tour to Vassar and Marist Colleges, and a two-day post-conference tour to additional colleges and universities, including Princeton, Columbia, Barnard, and Fordham.
The conference is co-chaired by Claire Cafaro of HoHoKus, New Jersey, and Susan Smith, of Mt. Kisco, New York.
