WOODBRIDGE, NJ — On Friday, the NJ Attorney General released video footage of a fatal car accident that occurred February 20 on Rt. 1 in Woodbridge.
This was the crash where a Woodbridge Police officer was chasing an 18-year-old Iselin teen boy, Mikael Salman, down Rt. 1. The officer, Woodbridge Police Officer Khari Manzini, was trying to pull the teen over for allegedly speeding.
Salman did not stop, and collided with another car. He survived the impact. However, Karla Gamero, a 17-year-old Edison High School student, was his front-seat passenger and she died in the crash. Her beloved pet dog was also killed in the crash, according to her obituary.
The recordings are available to view here: https://njoag.box.com/s/pblntysu82pd4iqt70leyvqx92igifzd It includes police dashboard camera from Manzini's patrol car; security footage from businesses on Rt. 1 and police radio transmissions.
Here are the details of the crash:
Shortly before midnight on Feb. 19, Salman was driving a Nissan Maxima allegedly at a high speed southbound on Rt. 1. NJ101.5 reported Salman was going more than 100 miles per hour.
Manzini, in a marked patrol vehicle, left his stationary position and attempted to catch up to the vehicle. Manzini tried to pull the Nissan over, but Salman did not stop as directed, said the Attorney General.
Both vehicles traveled from Route 1 South to Avenel Road (Cameras 5 and 6), onto Remsen Avenue, and ultimately went onto Route 35 (Saint George’s Avenue) before re-entering Route 1 South.
Approximately one minute after re-entering Route 1 South, the Nissan collided with a second civilian vehicle at the intersection of Route 1 South and Gill Lane.
Salman and the teen girl were trapped in the vehicle and had to be pulled out by local firefighters. Salman was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for serious injuries.
The girl and her dog were pronounced dead at 12:25 a.m. on February 20
The occupants of the car Salman collided with were also seriously injured and were also taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The police vehicle was not directly involved in the collision.
The Attorney General is investigating Officer Manzini’s conduct, and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating Salman’s conduct. Salman is charged with first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter while Eluding, second-degree Vehicular Homicide, three counts of second-degree Aggravated Assault, third-degree Aggravated Assault, fourth-degree Assault by Auto, Assault by Auto (disorderly persons offense), third-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child, second-degree Eluding and Animal Cruelty (disorderly persons offense).
In April, the Middlesex County Prosecutor offered Salman that he serve 20 years in prison for causing Gamero's death. Salman did not accept the deal.
He is being held in jail until his criminal case is resolved.
