Neighbor Saves Man Trapped in Woodbridge Fire Friday

A man was trapped inside a burning house Friday in Iselin and his neighbor rescued him with a ladder from his truck, police said.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ - A man was trapped on the second floor of a house on fire Friday in Woodbridge Township, and his neighbor rescued him, police said.

The call of the fire on Copper Avenue in the Iselin section came in at approximately 1:24 a.m. Friday, Capt. Roy Hoppock of the Woodbridge PD said. When police and fire crews from Iselin Fire District #9 got there, the home was fully engulfed in flames. A neighbor, identified by police as John Leo, and his wife were on their way home when they saw the fire and went to alert the residents.

Two of the three people in the house were already out; however a third person was trapped on the second floor, Hoppock said. Incredibly, Mr. Leo pulled a ladder off his truck and placed it up to the second floor, allowing the man to climb out and exit the burning home. Officers Brian Vella and Andrew Ferreira helped him to an ambulance. All three occupants were taken to JFK Medical Center for further evaluation. The cause of fire is unknown at this time.
