Pedestrian Hit, Killed In Woodbridge

The 75-year-old man was using a walker as he crossed the road against the traffic light, police said.

A 75-year-old man, who was using a walker as he tried to cross Route 27 in Woodbridge, was hit by a vehicle and killed early Wednesday morning, police said.

The man was wearing dark clothing and crossing the road in a dimly light area when he was hit by a 1995 Ford Escort near Wood Avenue around 4:30 a.m., Woodbridge police said.

The driver, a 70-year-old man, had the green light, said Sgt. Eric Nelson of the department’s traffic safety unit.

Woodbridge police officers had been in the Metropark parking lot and arrived at the scene within about 30 seconds, said Nelson.

First aid was administered to the victim, and he was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He died from his injuries, said Nelson.

The driver, who was on his way to work, told police he did not see the pedestrian until the last second.

The 70-year-old man applied his brakes and swerved, but impact still occurred, said Nelson.

The pedestrian’s last known address is in Elizabeth, and police on Wednesday were working to notify his family about his death.

WABC News said Route 27 north was closed at Wood Avenue after the accident.

The scene was cleared by about 7:20 a.m., according to a traffic website.

The driver did not receive any summonses.
