Perth Amboy Man Accused Of Killing Sister Undergoes Psych Exam
A Perth Amboy man accused of killing his sister and then trying to flee to Canada was found not guilty by reasons of insanity.

PERTH AMBOY, NJ — A Perth Amboy man accused of killing his sister and then trying to flee to Canada must undergo a psych evaluation before his case can proceed to trial, a judge ruled Friday.
Arun Aftab, 34, of Perth Amboy, is charged with shooting his sister, Urooj Aftab, 32, to death in the fall of 2017.
On Oct. 4, 2019, he was found not guilty by reasons of insanity in a non-jury trial, according to the Middlesex County Superior Court. He had been charged with murder, burglary and weapons offenses but all charges were dropped and he was acquitted.

Had he been found guilty, he was facing 75 years to life in prison.
The brother and sister shared a home on Harbor Town Boulevard in Perth Amboy. She was murdered either late Sunday night, Oct. 29, 2017 or just after midnight on Monday, Oct. 30. Police were alerted by a family friend at approximately 12:10 a.m. Monday, who called the police to ask them to go to the home and check on the well-being of the young woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:49 a.m.

Aftab was caught by Canadian Border Patrol as he was trying to enter Canada with a handgun.
He originally filed for asylum and fought his extradition back to New Jersey. He eventually changed his mind, waived extradition and voluntarily returned to New Jersey to face the murder and weapons charges.
His lawyer requested he undergo a psych evaluation, which Superior Court Judge Michael Toto approved. Aftab is currently being held in the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center and will remain there until his bail hearing.
