Swing Sabroso Sways to a Latin Beat in the Downtown
Latin music orchestra Swing Sabroso set the tone to dance music as the 3rd annual pizza run took place right around the corner.
It was a beautiful summer night, and as a cooling breeze blew over the small park, “Swing Sabroso”, a New Jersey Latin music orchestra, played on to a huge crowd. Simultaneously, numerous runners were taking part in the town's Annual Pizza Run.
Held in Parker Press Park, the Latin group performed as part of Woodbridge Wednesdays, but this day was definitely more than just a music event. The park was a flurry of activity with hundreds of people there to hear the band or dance to the music, visit the Farmer’s Market stands, or to greet the returning runners.
Marissa Rodriguez was one of the many onlookers. She said, “My mother, Debbie Banks of Roche Podiatry, has been sponsoring the event for several years.” She went on to say, “It’s amazing Woodbridge does this. The Spanish group is great and keeps everyone on their feet.”

Emily Vinciguerra, a regular attendee at the music events in Woodbridge, said “I always come to all these concerts. The ones in the park are my favorite because they’re international. Plus, how can you beat the price for such great entertainment?"
Swing Sabroso, a nine piece orchestra led by flute and saxophone player Ray Rodriguez, performed a variety of lively dance numbers. The selections included salsa, meringue, cumbia, bacata, and bolero.

Although many people were just sitting and listening to the music while they enjoyed a cool drink or Rita’s ice, there were also several couples dancing. Deborah Clark, one of the dancers, is a follower of the group. “They perform all over New Jersey. This includes Long Branch, Perth Amboy and Newark, just to name a few, but you can go on their website to learn more," she said.
Following Swing Sobroso, Woodbridge will present two more concerts in a Latin vein on July 13 and 27. Several other music ensembles that include classic rock, New Orleans Mardi Gras music, reggae, and blues will follow in August.
