2 Bergen Athletes Nominated For Heart Of A Giant Award

Michael Giancaspro is the first to show up and the last to leave. Matthew Mai is Student Council president.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Two county football players have been nominated for an award sponsored by the New York Giants.

Michael Giancaspro of Wood-Ridge High School is a second-year team captain for the Blue Devils.

"He is the first to show up, and the last off the field as he regularly puts in extra work with his teammates," said head football coach Charlie Trentaconsti.

Giancaspro coaches three youth football teams.

Matthew Maj worked hard in the offseason and is the team's starting center this season, his senior year.

Head coach Benjie Wimberly said of Maj, "There is nothing this young man cannot do if he puts his mind to it. When obstacles get in his way he works hard to overcome them."

Maj is student council president and is ranked fifth in his class.

The Heart of Giant Award is presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery and the Giants. Players are nominated by the their coaches based on their commitment, teamwork, will, character and dedication.

Sixty players from the tri-state area will be nominated for the grand prize, which includes a $5,000 equipment grant for his or her high school's football program. The winner will be presented with the award during a ceremony at a New York Giants' home game at MetLife Stadium. Nominees are announced in six sets of 10. Each of the six finalists will receive a $1,500 equipment grant for their school.
Public voting on the most recent set of 10 nominees, including George, is open online for 25 days.
