Bergen Academies Teacher Allegedly Made Anti-Korean Comments

The teacher allegedly said she loved certain cultures but 'hates Korean,' according to a report.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A Spanish teacher at Bergen Academies High School reportedly said she hates the Korean culture to Korean students during a class recently.

The Korea Daily, a Korean news website, reported that the teacher, whose name is being withheld, asked students what their native countries of origin were. When a Korean student answered 'Korea,' the teacher reportedly said, "I hate Korean."

She asked Korean students in another class to raise their hands and repeated what she said earlier, the report said.

School administrators met with members of the Korean Parents Partnership Organization and other Korean associations regarding the incident, NorthJersey.com reported.

Bergen County Technical Schools Superintendent Howard Lerner said that "intolerance, insensitivity, or discrimination of any sort is contrary to the values and policies of the school district and not tolerated," NorthJersey.com reported.

According to the report, local Korean-American leaders said the teacher had been moved to different classes and apologized to the students.

Bergen County Academies is a magnet school that is often ranked among the best public schools in the country.
