Braves Girls Gelling as Tennis Season Beckons

Hills squad 'working hard' to help "each other to improve"

Never underestimate how a team's ability to have fun can impact its chances of success. The fun-loving Indian Hills girls tennis team is hoping their tight bonds will help them improve upon last year's strong showing.

"I definitely see us winning more than half our matches and hopefully almost all of them," said senior Elena Tesser. "We're all friends, so we have a certain comfort level, and everyone is helping each other to improve."

A year ago, the Braves went 9-7 in the regular season and 2-1 in the playoffs, falling in the state sectional semifinals to Pascack Hills. With their experienced anchors at the top of the lineup, senior Aly Haas at No. 1 singles and Tesser at No. 2 singles, Indian Hills has reason to feel good about its chances.

"This year we have a chance to do some things," said coach Keith Andrews. "The girls are working hard, they're enthusiastic, and they're pushing each other in challenge matches.  They've demonstrated so far that they have a desire to do their best and win."

The third spot on the singles side will be occupied by talented freshman Sabrina Chase. The No. 1 doubles team to open the season will be juniors Kristy Faren and Brenna McClure, while junior Sedona Levy and senior Megan O'Brien will play No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Jessica Corcorin is currently rehabbing an injury and will replace O'Brien in the lineup when she's healthy. Seniors Christina Patron and Jenna Koch also provide depth for the Braves.

Andrews was coy about specific, tangible goals for his squad, but sees the potential in his team to peak for the playoffs.

"I'd like to see the girls become better players as each game progresses and get better as the season progresses," said Andrews, who noted that due to their many other sports and academic-related activities his players don't get as much summer tournament experience as would be ideal.

The lack of tournament experience can be overcome by the sound technique and fundamentals his players display, Andrews said. But the players certainly aren't coasting on that ability.

"We're working hard, our technique isn't quite there but we're working on that, we're working on our footwork and our technique," Tesser said. "If we continue to be dedicated, I think we can achieve (our goals)."
