Local Faces: Sandy Phillips

Small business owner, traveler, Zumba enthusiast

When Sandy Phillips shops at in Franklin Lakes, The Depot in Midland Park or in Westwood she can’t help but smile when she sees customers admiring the elegant serving utensils this crafty entrepreneur has created for her 7-year-old business .

Food

I enjoy eating at home but when I go out I'm a creature of habit. I love the sole francese over escarole at Andrea’s in Waldwick. My other mainstays are Portobello’s in Oakland and Matthew’s Diner. I am also addicted to the Fuji Apple Chicken salad at Panera.

Travel

Every year it is a trip to Boca Raton to visit family. My husband and I enjoyed a recent visit Scottsdale and Phoenix. This spring my husband and I will visit Los Angeles. My son has an internship through Ithaca College and will be living on the West Coast this semester. I am hoping to get to see a taping of the Ellen Show, Big Bang Theory and Jay Leno.

Entertainment

I exercise every day. I love my Zumba class but also enjoy Pilates and aerobics.

Living close to NYC it is always fun to see a Broadway Show. My two current favorites on the Great White Way are Jersey Boys and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. The music in both shows is great!

Education

My son attended and I can say he was academically prepared for the rigors of college courses. I had a career in human resources and personnel until I had my son. My lifelong love of arts and crafts led to me starting my own business.

Wishes

Personally I hope my business continues to grow and my creations can be found at shops around the nation and on my website. I hope my son and other college students find meaningful employment that utilizes their skills and will financially allow them to return to Bergen County.

Issues

I wish there was more attention and money allocated towards the arts. Not only in school budgets but as part of community enrichment. Appreciating the arts is a lifelong attribute.

Wyckoff

I love our hometown feeling. I grew-up in Wayne but have called Wyckoff home for 25 years. Some of my dearest friends I met when my son started preschool, and these friendships continue to be an important part of my life.
