McCann Declared Winner Of District 5 Republican Primary
Breaking: McCann was declared the winner over Steve Lonegan, an ex-Bogota mayor and gubernatorial and senate candidate.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Following an aggressive primary race by both Republican candidates, John McCann was declared the winner of the 2018 Republican primary for New Jersey's 5th Congressional District.
McCann, a powerful lawyer from Oakland, defeated Mayor Steve Lonegan, an ex-gubernatorial and senate candidate. McCann will run against Democrat Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a first-term congressman, in the general election.

McCann is general counsel to the New Jersey Sheriffs Association and Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino. He has never held elected office.

Lonegan ran for governor twice and against now-incumbent Senator Cory Booker in a special election in 2013 to serve the remainder of the late Frank Lautenberg's term.
Gottheimer, a former ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination. He is a former Microsoft executive and speechwriter for President Bill Clinton. He is a co-chair of the bipartisan congressional Problem Solvers Caucus.
The 5th Congressional District includes parts of Bergen, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren counties. Most of the district's 647,000 residents, 75 percent, live in Bergen County.
The general election is Nov. 6. The person elected will begin their term in January 2019.
