Ramapo LAX, Indian Hills Baseball & Softball Score Big Wins

Ramapo Baseball, Softball, Golf, Lacrosse and IH Softball and Golf notch victories.

It was a dominating week all the way around for Ramapo and Indian Hills sports as the Baseball, Softball, LAX and the Golf squads saw their respective seasons kick into high gear. Here's a recap of all the action this past week.

 IH Softball

April 18: Lady Braves 10 – Dumont 0 (5 innings)
It was a dominating shutout win for the Braves as they mercied Dumont in 5 innings.  Ashley DeYoung got the win, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 7.  Morgan Levine had a long tape-measure shot and drove in 4 and right fielder Carey Houston had 3 singles, 2 steals, and an RBI.

JV also had a big victory with an 11-0 win, but the freshmen suffered a 5-1 loss.

April 20: Lady Braves 10 – River Dell 3
Although it looked like a good matchup on paper between the 6th (IH) and 8th ranked teams in North Jersey, this one was all Braves.  Morgan Levine continued putting up big numbers this season as she slugged a double and had 2 RBI.  Senior Kara Pepper hit a triple and also registered 2 RBI.  Kelly Strittmatter, Madison Levine, and Ashley DeYoung each finished with 2 hits and an RBI, and DeYoung K’ed 9 to get the win in the circle.

The JV team remained undefeated as sophomore Kristen Waters threw a no-hitter in a 7-0 win.  The freshmen completed the sweep over the Hawks with a 15-5 win.

Ramapo Softball

The Lady Raiders rank 12th in the Top 25 after a strong 5-1 start.  Their success can be attributed to their hot bats, as Ramapo has scored 45 runs through the first six games. 

April 18: Lady Raiders 7 – Hackensack 1
Pitcher Caitlyn Hickey had a homerun and got the win to move to 3-0 on the year.  Five Raiders had an RBI including 2 by freshman Melanie Psota.

April 20: Lady Raiders 2 – Fair Lawn 0
Emily Brown and Caitlyn Hickey each had an RBI and Tori Sobel got the win to move to 4-1 on the year.

IH Baseball

April 20: Braves 12 – River Dell 7
Jason Haddy got his second win of the year as the Braves scored 8 runs in the second and held on for a five run victory.  Tommy Cancalosi knocked in 4 runs and Peter Fiumefreddo, Mike Laurice, and Austin Solecitto each knocked in 2.

Ramapo Baseball

April 18: Raiders 15 – Hackensack 2
Ramapo’s bats came alive and Ari Kaufman shut down the Comets to earn his second win.  Justin Gartner had 3 RBI and Ryan Dougherty, Alex Nickles, and Chris Thompson each knocked in 2.

April 20: Raiders 12 – Fair Lawn 2
Ramapo moved to 2-0 against Fair Lawn on the season with another big win over the Cutters.  TJ Hunt improved to 3-0 on the hill as the senior helped himself out with 6 RBIs in the game.  John Gadolfo had 4 RBIs of his own, and Chris Liquori smashed a homer and had 2 RBIs.

Golf

Both Ramapo and Indian Hills come in to the week ranked in the Top 15.  The Raiders sit in the #5 spot while Hills ranks #14.

Indian Hills

April 18: Braves 177 – Bergenfield 205
The Braves moved to 4-1 on the year with a big victory over the Bears.  Kyle Koonjy (40) and Nick Finizio (42) had low rounds for IH.

April 19: Braves 158 – Ramsey 160
IH won its second match of the week with an exciting 2 stroke win over the Rams.  Kyle Koonjy had a team low of 36 and Kenny Fobian shot a 37.

Ramapo

April 18: Raiders 157 – River Dell 164
Eric Regojo, Mike Galdi, and Tom Opila all shot 39 to lead Ramapo to victory.

April 20: Raiders 157 – St. Joseph 187
Ramapo earned a big win at Apple Ridge as Joey Van Calcar led the way with a 1 over 36.

Indian Hills Lax

The girls team entered the week ranked 3rd with a 6-3 record.

April 20: Lady Braves 21 – Pope John 2
IH got off to a tremendous start with 15 goals in the first half and blew out their opponent by 19.  Nicole Kopyta had 7 goals and an assist, Natalie Carti scored 6 and added 4 helpers, Katie Taranto scored 4, and Stephanie Stone finished with 3 scores.

Ramapo Lax

The boys remain in the Top 5 in North Jersey at 5-3, but face strong Bergen Catholic and Mahwah teams.

April 20: Raiders 8 – Bergen Catholic 6

April 23: Raiders 12 – Mahwah 8
Mahwah came into the contest riding high after a huge 12-11 overtime win over Don Bosco, but on Saturday it was Ramapo who got to celebrate a big win.  Chris Colaneri scored 5 times, Dan Steimel added 2, and Sal Sassano had a goal and an assist to go along with 15 ground balls.  Mike Turpan finished with 10 saves in the win.  Next week the Raiders will get their shot against Don Bosco in a showdown in Ramsey.
